Ana Maria Branza (ROU) is defending her top world ranking and going for another podium finish at this weekend’s World Cup event in Barcelona. Challenging her will be Anna Sivkova (RUS), the world #2 and Anqi Xu (CHN) who won out in Saint Maur. A total of 226 fencers are registered for the event.
Other US fencers advancing include Anna Van Brummen (who had to knock out teammate Natalie Vie), and Amanda Sirico.

This weekend is the 38th edition of the Ciutat de Barcelona International Trophy Fencing. Throughout its 30-year history many stars of the sport have participated. While the tournament has featured men’s foil and men’s epee in the past. This tournament has featured Women’s Epee since 2005.
The inaugural “Ciutat de Barcelona” was then named the “Copa Ciudad de Barcelona” in November 1957 and featured men’s epee. This first event was won by Umberto Menegalli (SUI). It wasn’t until 1981 that the Catalan Fencing Federation would organize the 5th edition of the event, but this time it was a Spanish national event featuring men’s foil. In 1986 the tournament switched to a men’s epee event and in 1989 the “Ciutat de Barcelona” was named a World Cup event. The tournament would continue as a men’s epee event until 2005 when it became part of the Women’s Epee World Cup circuit.
