The 2014 Fencing World Championships kick off with the preliminary rounds for men’s and women’s sabre on Tuesday, July 15th. This promises to be a week full of great fencing along with the requisite surprise performances and upsets.
For the USA, Miles Chamley-Watson looks to defend his crown in Men’s Foil and Mariel Zagunis to defeat reigning world champion Olga Kharlan in Women’s Sabre. This is one of the strongest US fencing teams to date, with a combined 12 fencers ranked in the top-16 of their individual disciplines! The top ranked US team is the Women’s Sabre team, currently ranked 3rd.

Format for individuals:
- Top 16 fencers in FIE world rankings get an automatic bye to the final DE table of 64.
- Preliminary pools of 6 or 7 fencers
- Top 16 fencers from the pools get placed in the 17-32 spots of the final DE table of 64
- Remaining fencers are placed in DE tables (% cut from pools??) and fence DE’s of 15 until 32 remain.
- The last 32 from the preliminary DE tables are put in spots 33-64 on the final DE table of 64
- DE of 64 runs single elimination until the finals. No fence off for 3rd.
Format for team events:
- Teams are placed in a DE table based on FIE world ranking
- Winners advance on
- Losers go to losers brackets to fence for place (up to 16th)
- There is a bronze medal match
