Women’s Champions Crowned

Day two of the 2010 NCAA Fencing Championships concluded with the crowing of the champions in Women’s Epee, Foil and Sabre today. The competition for the NCAA team championship is extremely tight, with two points separating the top 3 slots.

Margherita Guzzi Vincenti (Penn State), Nicole Ross (Columbia), and Caroline Vloka (Harvard) took home the individual titles for epee, foil, and sabre.

At the end of the women’s competitions St. John’s leads the field with 92 points. Notre Dame is in second with 91 and Penn State in 3rd at 90 points.

Princeton and Harvard are well behind in 4th and 5th with 76 and 75 points respectively.

At the NCAA Fencing Championships, each school’s finish in the championships are based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships.

In the epee competition, Margherita Guzzi Vincenti (Penn State) won the championship with a 15-10 victory over Harvard’s Noam Mills. Vincenti beat Courtney Hurley (Notre Dame) 15-11 in the semi-finals. Mills edged out Penn State’s Anastasia Ferdman 8-7 to advance to the final bout.

Women’s sabre found Caronline Vloka (Harvard) defeating 2009 champions Rebecca Ward (Duke) 15-13 in the final. Vloka qualified for the semi-finals as the #3 seed with a record of 19 victories. She bested Margarita Tschomakova (Ohio State) 15-10 in the semis. Ward secured the #1 spot in the semis by winning 22 of her 23 bouts. Ward defeated Dagmara Wozniak (St. John’s) 15-7 in the semi-final round.

Nicole Ross (Columbia) won the women’s foil event. She won 21 pool bouts to secure the #1 slot in the semi-finals. She beat Evgeniya Kirpicheva (St. John’s) 15-8 and then won the NCAA Championship with a 15-9 victory over Doris Willette (Penn State). In the semi-finals, Willette defeated Dayana Sarkisova (Northwestern) 15-2.

Competition continues through the weekend with the men’s events on Saturday with finals on Sunday.
