German foilist and Olympic Gold Medalist Benjamin Kleibrink was rushed to a hospital in Shanghai, China following an assault at a restaurant.

According to the report (translated from German), Kleibrink was exiting a restaurant after a team dinner and was attacked from behind by a European (the attacker’s identity has not been disclosed).

Following the attack, Kleibrink was rushed to a hospital where he is currently in stable condition. His attacker has been arrested by Chinese authorities.

As of now, Kleibrink is not expected to compete in the European Champioships in Turin, which begin on June 20th.

“We are stunned by such an act,” said sporting director Sven Ressel, who is in constant contact with the German Consulate. “We hope that Benjamin is quickly recovered and wish him well,” he adds.
