Seth Kelsey (USA) improved into the top-16 in the FIE World Rankings with the world cup victory at the Challenge Australia this past weekend.
Kelsey won his last three direct elimination bouts by one touch each – defeating Great Britain’s Jonathan Willis 5-4 in the quarter finals, Tigran Bajgoric (CAN) 13-12 in the semi-finals, and finally Keisuke Sakamoto (JPN) 11-10 for the gold medal.
US fencers made a strong showing, with 4 fencers in the top 16. Joining Kelsey were Cody Mattern (9th), Travis Exum (11th), and Jimmy Moody (15th). Also fencing for the US were Eric Hansen (20th), Keith Lichten (21st), and Bobby Cottam (26th).
The FIE Men’s Epee circuit heads next to the Americas where the next 4 world cup events will be in Canada, Puerto Rico, Columbia, and Argentina. Fencers are able to count the best three events in each zone (Americas, Asia, Africa, Europe) towards their FIE world ranking. Having the last 4 events close to home allows the US fencers a better choice of events to improve their world rankings prior to the Pan American zonal championships and the World Championships, to be held in Paris, France this November.
