France Defends Women’s Sabre Title; US Shut out Early

St. Petersburg, Russia.  The top ranked US team lost in the quarterfinals to an upstart Italian team, opening the door for rival Ukraine to roll through the top side of the elimination table to meet up with France in the final match.

France proved to have too much experience for the Ukrainians to handle, and they jumped to a 10 point lead in the final 3 bouts, winning 45-32.  In 2006 France defeated the US in the finals of the world championship to claim the 2006 World Title.

France was tested in a semifinal matchup against Russia, but 2007 World Champion Elena Netchaeva could not pull out the match for Russia as France prevailed 45-40.

Russia went on to win the bronze medal in a 45-35 rout of Italy.

US Woes Continue

The US, shut out of the medal rounds in the individual event, was looking to turn things around with a strong performance in the team event.  After their loss to Italy in the quarterfinals, the US team lost again to China 45-31 before ending the day with a victory against Korea 45-36 to claim 7th place.
