Massialas 2nd at Junior Worlds; Van Brummen 8th

Alexander Massialas earned the silver medal at the 2011 World Championships in Jr. Men’s Foil.  In the final bout he lost 15-9 to Edoardo Luperi (ITA).  Kirill Lichagin (RUS) and Robert Gatai (HUN) shared the bronze.

Massialas entered the elimination bracket as the 11th seed but upset 3rd seed Lorenzo Nista (ITA) and 2nd seed Robert Gatai (HUN) in the quarter-finals and semi-finals.

Race Imboden made the top-16 for the US with a 10th place finish and David Willete made the top-32, placing 28th.

Russia adds gold in Junior Women’s Epee

Kolobova Triumphant

Violetta Kolobova (RUS) added another gold to Russia’s tally with her victory over Yujie Sun (CHN) in the Junior Women’s Epee world championship.  Kolobova defeated Sun 10-8 in the final bout.  Maya Guchmazova (RUS) and Camilla Batini (ITA) shared bronze.

The US results were lead by Anna Van Brummen who bounced back from a 3-3 pool result and seeding of 44th to make her way to the quarter-finals where she fell 15-12 to Sun.  Van Brummen placed 8th.

The other US fencers placed in the top-32.  Audrey Abend placed 21st and Katharine Holmes 28th.
