Men’s Results from the NYC Sabre World Cup
If anyone was wondering how long Limbach would be debilitated because of his recent injury the answer is not for long. Limbach beat some of the top fencers yesterday before finally going out to Alexey Yakimenko, one of the few fencers these days who is fencing better than the German.
Yakimenko’s recent hat-trick of world cups in Madrid, Warsaw, and now New York is unprecedented since he won them all in a row.
Yesterday six Americans performed well enough to make the top 64. Of those six, Mike Etropolski, Jeff Spear, and Avery Zuck lost their bouts in the round of 64 to Zalomir from Romania, He from China, and Limbach from Germany respectively.
Ben Igoe beat Woog from Israel before losing to reigning world champion Won Woo Young. Daryl made all of New York happy by beating Olympic Champion Aldo Montano from Italy for the first time in his career, including in the top 8 of this tournament last year. Homer then fell to Giampiero Pastore, also from Italy.
After doing what his teammate could not in beating Homer, Pastore proceeded to defeat Tim Morehouse in the top-16, eventually earning his second Bronze medal in a row. All in all it was a pretty good showing for the American crowd, three in the 64, two in the 32, and one in the top 16. Tomorrow we cheer out team on in teams!
