Olga Kharlan (UKR) holds the top spot in the Adjusted Olympic Rankings (AOR), followed by FIE World #1 Mariel Zagunis (USA). The Ukraine and United States are among 6 nations that current have the maximum allotment of 2 fencers qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games.
4 of the top-16 in the current FIE World Rankings would not qualify for the Olympic Games. For some, it’s a matter of recent performance not being up to the level of past performance. For others, it’s the result of being on a strong team. Russia’s Julia Gavrilova is 6th in the AOR, but as the 3rd Russian in the ranks would not qualify for 2012.
The same holds true for two Americans: Ibtihaj Muhammad and Dagmara Woziak are 13th and 15th in the AOR as well as 11th and 12th in the current FIE World Rankings, but have fallen behind Mariel Zagunis and Daria Schneider in the standings.
Current Adjusted Olympic Qualification:
The FIE World Rank does not take into account the results of the 2011 Zonal events, but the AOR does. That is the main reason for Chen (CHN) being 84th in the FIE but having the 12th spot in the AOR. A full spreadsheet containing all fencers and results is also available.
