Korea Stops US Advance with 45-36 Win

Courtney Hurley fights for Team USA in their semi-final match against Korea

Korea is assured another fencing medal as they advanced to the gold medal bout against China with a 45-36 victory over the United States.  In their semi-final match, Korea and the US would trade the lead in the first two bouts before Korea’s Choi Injeong used a 7-5 bout over Susie Scanlan to put Korea up 13-12.

Courtney Hurley used a 8-5 bout over Choi to bring the US from down 4 back to a one point deficit (22-21), but the Korean fencers were able to force the US into pressing the attack, which allowed Korea to be patient and score off of counter-attacks or well timed attacks of their own.

Over the last 3 bouts Korea went 19-12 against the USA to close out the match 45-36.

In the other semi-final bout, Anna Sivkova (RUS) used an 8-4 bout to bring Russia into a tie with China for a chance to compete for the gold. Seven seconds into the overtime period, Sun Yujie (CHN) scored the deciding touch to send China into the gold medal match.

The victory by Korea also means that Shin Lam, the fencer who lost in a bout with a time keeping error, will receive an Olympic medal as a member of the Korean team.  Shin was +6 for the match.

The United States and Russia will fence for the bronze.
