By taking the silver medal in the women’s epee team event at ExCeL on Saturday, Korea became the only country to win a medal in every fencing discipline, a feat not achieved since Italy at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.
Korea was second in the overall fencing medal count, behind only Italy which used a sweep of the women’s individual foil events and team gold medal to help secure 7 fencing medals.
As well as their silver, Korea won two gold medals: women’s individual sabre (KIM Jiyeon) and men’s team sabre; and three bronze: men’s individual foil (CHOI Byungchul), men’s individual epee (JUNG Jinsun) and women’s team foil.
Korea had won only two medals in all previous Games.
