At the 2010 Junior World Championships Hungary won gold in the Men’s Junior Team Epee event while Russia won the Women’s Junior Team Foil.
The US Junior Women’s Foil squad of Lee Kiefer, Eve Levin, Margaret Lu, and Nzingha Prescod took 4th place. The US Men took 18th.
The US Junior Women’s Foil squad of Lee Kiefer, Eve Levin, Margaret Lu, and Nzingha Prescod took 4th place. In the opening round the US defeated the Ukraine 41-31 on an 18-8 (+10) point spread by Prescod. The US then defeated the #4 seeded Italian team by a decisive 45-27 score. In the semi-final match the US fell to Korea 39-29.
Korea went on to face Russia in the gold medal bout. Russia won 35-29.
Fencing for the bronze medal, the US was down 35-20 to Poland going into the final bout of the match. Prescod rallied, and went on a 12-4 run in the final bout but ran out of time. Poland won the bronze 39-32.
Hungary won the Junior Men’s Team Epee event 45-40 over Italy. The Italians started the match and were in the lead until the 7th bout where Szabolcs Bojte (HUN) defeated Andrea Santarelli (ITA) 7-3 to give Hungary a 3 point edge at 31-28. In the following bout Mark Hanzwikkel kept the lead going 5-2 against Lorenzo Bruttini. The final bout had the pace quickened but Italy was only able to make up one point in a 10-9 effort by Gabriele Bino.
#8 seed Switzerland defeated the Ukraine 45-38 for the bronze.
The US men’s epee team of Alen Hadzic, Andrew Meyeres, Michael Raynis, and Jonathan Yergler lost in the first round 45-36 to Kazakhstan. The match was close until the 7th bout when Ilya Krutalevich went 10-5 against Hazdic. Raynis pushed the pace in the final bout, but was unable to cut into the Kazakh lead as the bout score ended 11-11. Kazakhstan went on to knock out #1 Russia 41-45 before losing to Switzerland 45-43. The US team placed 18th.
