Lee Kiefer has won bronze and team silver at the women’s foil World Cup event in Katowice, Poland. The team result confirmed the world number one ranking, while Russia’s Inna Deriglazova got back to winning ways after a disappointing world championship.
Two-time world champion and Olympic gold medalist Inna Deriglazova has defended her title from last year in Katowice, Poland, beating 19-year-old German Leonie Ebert in the final 13-9. Having survived a scare in the table of 32 against Italian Beatrice Monaco, who pushed Deriglazova 15-14, the Russian looked comfortable in reaching the final, defeating Italy’s number 5 ranked Arianna Errigo, 15-10 in the semifinal to reach the decider against her younger opponent.
Ebert herself had beaten number three-ranked Kiefer, who was runner-up at this event to Deriglazova last year, 15-12 to advance to the final.
In the teams, USA couldn’t get past France in the final, going down 45-26, having earlier beaten Russia 45-43. France overcame Italy in the other semifinal 45-44 and Italy were then able to beat Russia 45-38.
