Top-ranked Poland claimed the women’s team foil crown at a World Cup fencing tournament in Jordan Monday as they overcame Italy 39-38 in sudden death.
The Polish team, consisting of Sylwia Gruchala, Magdalena Knop,Malgorzata Wojtkowiak and Anna Rybicka bettered the third-ranked Italians led by world champion Valentina Vezzali, who took fifth in the individual event.
The team foil was the last of three events at the five-day competition in which a fencer can move closer to qualifying for the Athens Olympics.
Twenty-six of the world’s top 32 women fencers participated in the event, which attracted 33 worldwide.
