Fencers from NCAA schools will travel to State College this weekend for the annual Penn State Open. The Penn State Open and Temple Open comprise the two main “pre-season” NCAA fencing tournaments before the schools gear up for the dual meet season.
The DP combines the tournament coverage with their own pre-season look at Penn State : “Penn State Season Preview: With three All-Americans back this year, Penn faces first test at Penn State Open”
The Nittany Lions are heading into the 2011-2012 season after a second place finish at last years NCAA Fencing Championships. This year Head Coach Emmanuil Kaidanov is returning six All-Americans and is looking to improve upon his teams success from last year. The fencers are hoping to reclaim the NCAA National Title they held in both 2009 and 2010. The final roster of Nittany Lions competing will be decided later this week.
Fencers from NCAA Champion Notre Dame will also be competing at Penn State.
