Kelly Hurley – Junior World Champion

Kelly Hurley added to the US medal count with a victory over Romania’s Deac Simona 15-11 to win the gold medal at the Junior Women’s Epee championship. Hurley learned earlier this month that she had qualified to represent the United States at the Beijing Olympic Games.

Early in the day Kelly dropped a pool bout to Finland’s Catharina Kock 5-1 but won all of her other preliminary matches and entered the direct eliminations seeded 18th. She managed to squeeze out three tough victories to make the top-8. Her first two elimination matches went 15-14 and then she upset #2 seed Ewa Nelip of Poland in a 5-4 match, the lowest point total for an elimination match all day.

Kelly’s sister, Courtney took 13th at the event after being eliminated by Simona 15-7 in the round of 16.
