Olympians from several different sports including fencing, taekwondo, wrestling and others will be on the lawn of Capitol Hill on Wednesday, July 29th to demonstrate their sports and talk to children about leading healthier lives along with members of the Congressional Youth Sport Caucus and Chicago’s 2016 Olympic Committee.

The event will run 2-4pm and include short speeches by Olympians and Congressmen. Several hundred people are expected from the local area and they will have the opportunity to see the Olympians demonstrating their sports as well as having the opportunity try them out.

Tim Morehouse, 2008 US Olympic Silver Medalist in Fencing and National Spokesperson for Kid Fitness said, “We’re excited to teach children some sports they might not get to try everyday while sharing with them the importance of eating healthy and exercise and supporting Chicago’s Olympic Bid.”

Purpose of Event:

To help exhibit nationwide support for Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games and to help raise awareness of and build support for youth sport programs across the US.

Event Description:

This will be an educational display of a selection of Olympic and Paralympic sports, including fencing, soccer and judo. A number of Olympic and Paralympic athletes will be present to provide pointers about their sports and to interactwith guests. Members of Congress that are members of the Youth Sports Caucus will attend and speak at the event. Patrick Ryan, CEO of Chicago 2016, will also speak at the event as will a number of the athletes.

Participating Organizations:

World Sport Chicago (WSC) is the legacy arm of the Chicago 2016 Olympic bid working to enhance the image, awareness and participation in Olympic and Paralympic sports across Chicago. WSC is also beginning to work with other cities to form a coalition of cities focused on sharing ideas, practices and assets for expanding youth sports programs in disadvantaged areas. WSC intends to serve as a catalyst in Chicago and across the country in developing a sustainable legacy of sport programs that serve as a real agent of social change. William Scherr, an Olympic medalist in wrestling, is chairman of the board and Scott Myers serves as the executive director.

Chicago 2016 is a 501(c)(3) corporation whose mission is to seek the privilege of hosting the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Chicago. The committee’s board consists of business, civic, athletic, cultural and academic leaders representing Chicago and the surrounding Midwest region. Patrick Ryan serves as the organization’s chairman and CEO.
