Aldo Montano shook off an early deficit to come from behind and win the Gold Medal in the individual men’s sabre competition 15-14 over Zsolt Nemscik of Hungary.

Montano, pictured above in his round of 16 match against Keeth Smart (USA), defeated several medal contenders including Sergei Charikov of Russia.  Montano was the 6th seed and Zsolt (HUN) the 5th seed.

Nemcsik defeated 2000 gold medalist Mihai Covaliu (ROM) and then 24th seed Vladislav Tretiak (UKR) to reach the final match against Montano.

Nemcsik stormed out to an early 3-0 lead and seemed to have Montano on the ropes.  After the 1st period break, Montano clawed back into the match but still faced match-point down 13-14.

Montano evened up the score at 14-all with a risky point-in-line that caught Nemcsik looking for the blade.  At 14-14, Montano scored the final point on his attack, winning the gold medal.
