Nick Chinman (15, Boulder, Colo.) reached the top eight in his first Junior World Championships outing, in the Cadet Men’s Epee competition. Seeded 55th after the seeding round, Chinman beat the 7th seed, David Csobo of Hungary, 15-8 before losing to no. 2-seeded Grigori Beskin of Israel 15-11. Chinman will also fence in the Junior Men’s Epee competition and is scheduled to be the first alternate in the Junior Men’s Foil Team event.


US Cadet Dwight Smith (16, New York, N.Y.), seeded 29th after pools, was eliminated in the round of 64 by Jens Wilkenborg of Sweden 14-9. Clayton Kenney (17, Denver, Colo.) was eliminated in the pool rounds.


Two US Cadet women’s foil fencers reached the top 16 before being eliminated; Doris Willete (16, Rodeo, Calif.) lost her bout to go to the top 8 to Saskia van Erven of the Netherlands 15-7, and Kelsey Finkel (17, New York, N.Y.) lost hers to Gyongyi Hanzelova of Hungary 15-7. Samantha Nemecek (16, Alto, Mich.) lost her first bout in the round of 64 to Julie Groslambert of Belgium 15-13.
