The Italian foilists continue to dominate the world stage. After the multiple triumphs in the 2003 World Championships, Italy continued the winning trend by taking Gold and Silver at the Vienna World Cup.
Salvaltore Sanzo defeated countryman Andrea Baldini. Italian Cassara finished in 5th place. Salvatore Sanzo, who won the 2001 World Championships, is now ranked 4th on the FIE rankings. He defeated French foilist Brice Guyart 15-11 in the semifinals and then took gold with the 15-12 win over Baldini.
US Fencer Jon Tiomkin made his case for making the 2004 Olympic team with a top-8 finish. He lost to eventual winner Sanzo in the quarterfinals. Tiomkin is first in the US rankings and the 2003 US National champion. He ranks 34th in the current World Cup standings.
