2008 Olympian Gerek Meinhardt made it through to the semi-finals before losing to hometown favorite Ed Jefferies 15-13.  Meinhardt would have to settle for bronze this year in the junior men’s foil event.  The men’s foil event was won by Tommaso Lari as he defeated Jefferies 15-13.

The women’s epee event was dominated by Yujie Sun (CHN).  The Chinese phenom won all of her pool bouts and rode a #3 seed to dominate the JWE event.  She obliterated her first two opponents 15-2 and 15-4.  The USA’s Susannah Scanlan put up more of a fight but lost 15-9 and Sun’s next two opponents would each notch up 11 points in their attempts to stop the left hander’s quest.

In a day of upsets, Sun held her seed and was the highest ranked fencer left in the final-8.  Sun had also competed in the cadet women’s epee event, finishing 5th.

The US fencers were all out early as Courtney Hurley placed 11th.  Though she won her first two elimination matches comfortably, she was unable to continue her run and lost 15-14 to Estonia’s Julia Zuikova.  Hurley led the match 11-9 at the end of the second period, but Zuikova fought her way back into the match to tie it up at 13-all.  Hurley scored next to set the score at 14-13 but was unable to hold off Zuikova who scored the final two touches of the match.

Scanlan finished 16th.  Francesca Bassa entered the third period of her elimination match with Cheryl Jahn (GER) tied 6-6 but was unable to get a lead and lost 15-10 to finish 49th.

In the men’s foil event, Jefferies (GBR) also took out the United States’ Miles Chamley-Watson who ended up 10th.  Alex Massialas finished 24th after he was upset in the round of 32.
