An 11-4 run from Rares Dumitrescu in the final bout shuts down Italy’s Aldo Montano and gives Romania the world championship gold in the men’s team sabre competition.  The US men finished 7th.

In the women’s epee competition, Italy dominated Poland to win 45-31 with the US team finishing 10th.

The team match started close with Dumitrescu beating Tarantino 5-4 in
the first bout.  Italy took the next 5 bouts to take and extend their
lead to 9 points at 30-21.  In the 6th and 7th bouts Romania tried to
claw their way back, but only gained 3 touches to send the anchors up
with Italy leading by 6, 40-34.

Dumitrescu, who took second in the individual, scored 3 quick touches
on Montano and cut Italy’s lead in half.  Montano scored the next
point on a long riposte and then the two traded touches until the
score reached 43-38.

Finding the tempo of Montano’s preparation, Dumitrescu continued to
win attack calls in the middle of the piste and scored 6 unanswered
points to give Romania the lead, 44-43.  On the next touch Montano
pulled the distance, causing Dumi to fall short and overextend himself
– giving Montano a very easy touch to tie the match at 44.

On the final action of the bout, Montano charges forward and is closed
out by Dumitrescu, who pulls off an 11-4 rally and wins 45-44.

The US men’s sabre team (Daryl Homer, Ben Igoe, Tim Morehouse, James
Williams) placed 7th.  The US beat Turkey 45-20 and then lost 45-32 to
Russia. In the placement rounds, Tim Morehouse went 11-0 on Zhong Man,
but was unable to get the US a victory as China won the bout 40-36.
The US then defeated defeated France 45-43 to take 7th place.

In women’s epee, Italy used two strong bouts from Bianca Del Carretto
to break open the match and cruise to a 45-31 victory over Poland.
Del Carretto went 5-0 against Danuta Dmowska-Andrzejuk in the 3rd bout
and 6-0 against Magdalena Piekarska in the 5th bout to put Italy up
18-6.  Forced to pick up the pace, the Polish fencers are pressed the
attack, but could not make up ground against Italy as the Italians won
45-31.

The US women’s epee team (Lindsay Campbell, Courtney Hurley, Kelley
Hurley, Susannah Scanlan) defeated Brazil 45-28 before losing to
Russia 39-37 in the round of 16.  In placement rounds, the US defeated
Hong Kong 28-22, and Switzerland 45-35 before falling to Korea 21-20.
The US finished 10th.
