We close world championships week with our featured fencing shirt from one of the most storied fencing clubs in the US, the New York Athletic Club (NYAC).

No athletic club in the world can boast of an Olympic medal tally comparable to that of the New York Athletic Club. Since the inception of the Olympic Games in 1896, NYAC competitors have accumulated in excess of 200 Olympic medals, 120 which have been gold.

The NYAC fencing program has had over 100 Olympians, over 100 individual US National Champions and 98 US Team National Championships. In the past ten years the NYAC men’s epee team has won the National Championships 8 times, finishing 2nd in the other two. The fencing program is headed up by chairman Michael Aufrichtig with epee coaches Dr. Aladar Koglar and Yafim Litvan, sabre coach Patrick Durkan, and youth coach Alex Abend.

At the 2009 Summer Nationals, the NYAC won two golds, eight silvers, and four bronze medals. This was accomplished while 8 team members competed at the Pan American Zonal Championships in El Salvador (winning 4 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze medals.)

This year, the NYAC qualified 25% of the US World Championship Team. Notable members include Ben Igoe (Men’s Sabre), Daria Schneider (Women’s Sabre), Seth Kelsey (Men’s Epee), Lindsay Campbell, Kelley Hurley, and Courtney Hurley (Women’s Epee).

The NYAC fencing program is a Fencing Olympic training center. If anyone has goals of making the Olympics and are ready to work hard, then Michael Aufrichtig wants to get your bio and fencing goals. You can contact him at [email protected].
