Team USA scored 8 medals over the 6 individual events at the 2011 Pan American Games.  The US fencers earned gold in 5 of the 6 events and 3 fencers earned silver medals.

Coming off of her bronze medal performance at the World Championships, Lee Kiefer (USA) defeated teammate Nzingha Prescod (USA) 15-9.

Seth Kelsey (USA) won the gold medal in Men’s Epee by defeating world #5 Ruben Limardo (VEN) 12-10.  He also defeated Cuba’s Reynier Henriquez 13-10 in the semi-finals.

Alexander Massialas (USA) and Mariel Zagunis (USA) added golds in Men’s Foil and Women’s Sabre on the second day of individual competition.   According to US Fencing, The Pan Am Games title is the first senior international gold medal for Massialas who earned the silver at the Pan Am Championships in Reno in July and has won titles at both the Junior and Cadet World Championships.

Tim Morehouse (USA) earned silver in his first Pan American Games with a 15-14 loss to Philippe Beaudry (CAN) in the Men’s Sabre event.  Beaudry had defeated James Williams (USA) in the semi-finals.

In Women’s Epee, Kelley and Courtney Hurley (USA) finished first and second out of the preliminary rounds and continued winning until they met in an all-US final.  In the end, the older Kelley won 15-13 over her sister.

These results do not count towards the FIE rankings or Olympic qualification but are used by the US Olympic Committee to determine the strength of the US in sports at the world regional level.
