Olympic Fencing Champion Mariel Zagunis Signs with Absolute Fencing Gear

On the eve of the 2013 World Championships, Mariel Zagunis signs with Absolute Fencing, leaving Leon Paul who developed the Zagunis Pro sabre blade. Zagunis is the latest athlete to sign with Absolute, joining Tim Morehouse, Daryl Homer, and Miles Chamley-Watson.

Two-time Olympic Champion Mariel Zagunis, the most decorated fencer in USA Fencing history, has joined forces with Absolute Fencing Gear in an historic marketing partnership that will pair the two throughout the 2020 Olympic Games.

Absolute Fencing has been ramping up their sponsorships, now to include Mariel Zagunis.

“Mariel is one of the greatest fencers in the history of fencing,” said Gary Lu, founder and owner of Absolute Fencing Gear. “We are thrilled to welcome her to the Absolute Fencing family and look forward to being part of many great moments in fencing together moving forward.”

Zagunis is a two-time senior world champion (2009, 2010), five-time world cup winner (2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012), two-time Olympic champion (2004, 2008) and Olympic Team Bronze Medalist (2008) in women’s saber. She is currently competing at the 2013 World Championships in Hungary, where she is pursuing her third individual title.

“I’m very honored to have partnered with such a great USA fencing company, and I look forward to pursuing my third Olympic championship in Rio 2016, while representing our country and this great brand,” said Zagunis.

Zagunis will have one of the most comprehensive equipment sponsorship deals in fencing history, which include plans for marketing her both domestically and abroad, product branding and development, as well as support for her off-the-field philanthropic endeavors.

Zagunis joins her London Olympic teammates Daryl Homer and Miles Chamley-Watson, as well as 2008 Olympic Silver medalist and Absolute Fencing creative director Tim Morehouse, as part of #TeamAbsolute, a new effort to support Team USA athletes.

“Mariel is our greatest champion and while she continues to succeed on the field of play, we want to ensure that her branding and marketing is up to her gold medal standards,” said Morehouse.

In conjunction with the sponsorship, Absolute Fencing Gear is announcing a sweepstakes, running from Aug. 5 until Aug. 10 midnight PST, in which the winner will receive a $500 fencing equipment shopping spree from Absolute Fencing Gear and an autographed saber from Mariel Zagunis. 20 others will receive autographed hats and t-shirts courtesty of Absolute Fencing Gear.
