As proof that fencing truly is a life-long sport, the 2010 Veterans Fencing World Championships kicks off today in Croatia. The event brings together fencers from around the world to compete in three age categories: 50-59, 60-69, and 70+. Fencers compete in the 6 weapons classifications of men’s and women’s epee, foil, and sabre.
The United States enters with one of the largest teams of the event, with 69 athletes competing. Great Britain is the only country with more as their cadre is 71 athletes. Overall the events range from a low of 10 competitors in the 70+ women’s sabre to 68 in the 50-59 men’s epee. (from the reference sheet on # of entries)
