The 2011 NCAA Fencing Championships kick off today with the first 4 rounds of the men’s competitions. NCAA.com is offering live video streaming and Prise de Fer Fencing Club is hosting the live bout results.
Over the course of 4 days, 144 athletes will compete in the six weapon disciplines: Men’s and Women’s Foil, Epee, and Sabre. Each fencer will fence 5 touch bouts against the other fencers in their weapon in a large pool format. After the bouts are complete, the top 4 fencers will face off in semi-final and final 15 touch direct elimination bouts.
Each pool bout victory by a fencer earns one point for their school for scoring for the overall NCAA Championship Team. The 15 touch elimination bouts will not count for the team championship.
Day 1 and 2 are the men’s events with the women’s events following on Saturday and Sunday. College Fencing 360 is also providing coverage of the fencing championships.
