8 US men’s foil fencers including world #3 Miles Chamley-Watson and 2008 Olympian Gerek Meinhardt are fencing in the Shanghai Men’s Foil event.
In the opening day of competition Chamley-Watson and Meinhardt did not fence. As top-16 in the world rankings they receive automatic byes to day 2.
Of the 6 fencers competing in the preliminary rounds, 3 made it out of pools and the preliminary elimination rounds to compete in the top-64 on Tuesday.
Race Imboden was one of the top-16 fencers out of the preliminary pools and qualified directly to the 2nd day’s direct elimination (DE) matches. The other fencers had to fight through DE bouts to get to the final 64.
David Willette ended the pools with a 2-4 record, but won his match to make it up. Jeremy Goldstein went 3-3 and won his elimination match.
On the losing side today were Ariel DeSmet who went 1-5 in pools, Kurt Getz, who went 3-3 and lost an elimation match to Jefferies (GBR), and Alexander Massialas, who went 3-3 then lost to Kwon 15-12 after being down 9-1.
