Seung Gu Kim (KOR) won the Montreal Men’s Epee World Cup with a 15-11 victory over Seth Kelsey (USA) in the finals. Kelsey made the finals by earning victories over Benjamin Ungar (USA) 15-10 in the quarter-finals and Jean-Michael Lucenay (FRA) 10-9 in the semi-finals.
Kim started the direct elimination round with the 45th seed. Ungar (USA) added drama to the day with his 15-13 victory over world #1 Gauthier Grumier (FRA) in the top-32.
Kim’s Cinderella run through the tournament began with back to back victories over US fencers Keith Lichten (15-9) and Cody Mattern (15-7). Kim then knocked out 3rd seed Ruben Limardo (VEN) 15-11 to make the top 8.
Kelsey started the elimination round with victories over Clifford Fishler (USA) 11-4 and Maxime Brinck-Croteau (CAN) 9-8 before defeating regional rival Silvio Fernandez (VEN) 15-12.
